He was tall, standing 6 foot 2 inches, and was a commanding figure.<br />
He is considered a Canadian hero, especially in the Niagara region. An ambitious man, he rose through the ranks from ensign at age 15 to major-general when he died. Many of his promotions were during peacetime, an unusual feat.<br />
His elevation to a knighthood was in recognition of his role in the capture of Detroit. Sadly, he died before he knew of this promption. His legendary hat had been ordered from Britain and arrived after his death.<br />
Here is a depiction of him before the battle, surveying the situation.<br />

I found this figure at a garage sale, minus sword and hat. Made something for him to stand on, furnished him with a weapon from my stash, and made him a replica of his famous hat.Little Roomerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08025824423996192903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4438902974937097232.post-76356236136663373682018-12-08T14:23:00.004-05:002020-11-05T20:27:29.722-05:00School DazeSome of us look back on school days with nostalgia, and some not so much. School rooms give lots of challenges, for both design and construction.<br />
Our mini group decided to create a 50’s primary school room.<br />
This is our inspiration.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd7vXrpPfDW8NewLm4CbTEotiN92Y-ql5dJdBtBCvC5k6hqODT7XSySwLVBQHF_HAYD3e4tX9MkRe-rPwHYfh7mTqiN7byO6NZ2ax0uo_n-4OpOOtmls4nHpvFbhMqJ1EDqwA1IZWrDm8/s1600/IMG_5920.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1017" data-original-width="1600" height="203" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd7vXrpPfDW8NewLm4CbTEotiN92Y-ql5dJdBtBCvC5k6hqODT7XSySwLVBQHF_HAYD3e4tX9MkRe-rPwHYfh7mTqiN7byO6NZ2ax0uo_n-4OpOOtmls4nHpvFbhMqJ1EDqwA1IZWrDm8/s320/IMG_5920.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
First came the desks. In my stash, I had a desk part, which was our starting off point. From this came the pattern.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_euOeOFc-NfSBC6SY-5QHjNA0NNyeEXYZDuT7mPoMDtNIlqi_I3PBmIyz1QOHGysv_IwXCmWlZ5AsoccFdzc7egh6s25o3OhiqH5uFbYOcxMIqdZZGgJFUYtEE2OZ8cy1erIHw3_ZPlA/s1600/IMG_4558.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1025" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_euOeOFc-NfSBC6SY-5QHjNA0NNyeEXYZDuT7mPoMDtNIlqi_I3PBmIyz1QOHGysv_IwXCmWlZ5AsoccFdzc7egh6s25o3OhiqH5uFbYOcxMIqdZZGgJFUYtEE2OZ8cy1erIHw3_ZPlA/s200/IMG_4558.JPG" width="128" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the prototype done with card.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then to cut out a gazillion pierces of desk legs from cardboard., glue 6 together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8uj2Qq71ceQ5VOZtkLjMC9Vg8zfWEoopibFYiGkf3CV2FIuYQ2ZtclKr5aPTckeQbWXE4UUUV9Uxt_tTtZtLQBee_j-SKcN64ZUULocEbMvvQ5UbOjNDiEqI4fZjSMB_JT3UEMJ0IrZk/s1600/IMG_4560.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8uj2Qq71ceQ5VOZtkLjMC9Vg8zfWEoopibFYiGkf3CV2FIuYQ2ZtclKr5aPTckeQbWXE4UUUV9Uxt_tTtZtLQBee_j-SKcN64ZUULocEbMvvQ5UbOjNDiEqI4fZjSMB_JT3UEMJ0IrZk/s320/IMG_4560.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

What do you think of the wood used for the desk? Can you believe it is made from foam core? Just cut to shape and sand the edges. Use a steel brush to create the texture. I have a tiny one I found at a garage sale, but you could use a pet brush. The ink wells are air dry clay, rolled thin and cut to shape with a large straw. Place on double sided tape, glue a small bead on top, allow to dry and paint the whole thing black. Then glue in place.<br />

Well, we know how that went!<br />
<br />
This is an excellent article explaining what reality was like on the battlefield. Imagine not being able to tend to your wounded friend, who would have to wait for the stretcher bearers! Attack at all cost!<br />
Many conscientious objectors were allowed to play in a non-combatant role as a stretcher bearer, not participating in the slaughter, but providing aid and comfort to the wounded.<br />
<a href="http://guysboroughgreatwarveterans.blogspot.com/2013/07/stretcher-bearers.html">http://guysboroughgreatwarveterans.blogspot.com/2013/07/stretcher-bearers.html</a><br />
<br />
The bravery and dedication of the stretcher bearers who risked life and limb to rescue wounded and dying soldiers is recognized in this painting by Brian Lorimer.<br />

Then I came across these nutcrackers at the $ store. Hmmmm.......<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The little lady was somewhat strangely bulky around the waist. And once her clothes came off, what did appear! Gee, aren’t there smaller music boxes?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I had some small scale figures in my stash, a couple of trees, and a large cake container, and this is how it ended up. The base is foam core cut to fit the container, lawn is a mix of paper mache, sawdust, glue and paint. The bushes are moss, dabbed with glue and sprinkled with flocking. The walk is paper mache, painted after it dried.<br />

There have been a lot of photos on the Net referring to a manger as a king-sized bed.<br />
It was a simple Christmas project,starting out with some stir sticks and toothpick.<br />
First the frame, 4 sticks and a toothpick.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuax5uWtFW0s8Nf4mEQtGkcl5utAnRC4WYJUfrFkUY3bku_O9zZweB9GSlVAZg5o0nVDbRYUM9730KHviQLTek09Je6lxSkThaPN-WELtp0IkXVhqmALCVCcX2LBpd2IOxk07uBcb66JU/s1600/IMG_2937.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuax5uWtFW0s8Nf4mEQtGkcl5utAnRC4WYJUfrFkUY3bku_O9zZweB9GSlVAZg5o0nVDbRYUM9730KHviQLTek09Je6lxSkThaPN-WELtp0IkXVhqmALCVCcX2LBpd2IOxk07uBcb66JU/s320/IMG_2937.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Once the basic frame is dry,it is easy to fill in the sides.<br />
Note: the sticks forming the x shapes were not thick enough,so extra strips were added<br />
This is a picture of the finished manger, painted a Dresden blue and dry brushed with tan.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The snow effect is quite wonderful, a train modeler’s trick. Use diluted glue with a drop of dishwashing soap, and spread where you wish to have snow. Then sift baking soda over the area. Shake off excess once dry.<br />

Then cover.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In 1914, the war-torn fields of Western Europe became a natural breeding ground for the Papaver rhoeas or poppy, as it is more commonly known. It was in these fields that Canadian soldier John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Fields”, probably the most widely known poem of the First World War. It was McCrae’s words that turned the poppy into a powerful war emblem and the symbol of Remembrance Day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In what has become the signature piece of Brian Lorimer’s Project Remembrance collection, In Flanders carries on the tradition of the poppy. Depicting a moment of calm before the quiet field is transformed into a battlefield, the painting hints at the destruction to come; the soldiers who stand waist deep in the scarlet poppies will soon stand in the blood of their fallen brethren.</div>

This is a Niagara minis project. The teapots are from air dry clay, as well as the cakes. Some of the frosting is dimensional paint. The cake rack was made from bits and pieces of wood, shelves slightly slanted for display.<br />
The roof is a glass insert from a picture without the frame. It lights the room effectively, adding shadows and light.<br />

<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "uictfonttextstylebody"; font-size: 21px;"><b>Instructions with kind permission from Viola Williams,</b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "segoe ui" , "helvetica" , "arial" , "lucida grande" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><b>www.violasdolls.com</b></span><br />
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "uictfonttextstylebody"; font-size: 21px;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "uictfonttextstylebody"; font-size: 21px;">Times and fashions do change, don't they? Sometimes they go in circles. Once upon a time, privileged ladies of the upper classes valued a pallid face, which indicated they had the money to achieve this result. Elaborate parasols protected them from the sun, while ingesting arsenic, or applying lead based creams supplemented the effect. </span><br />
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "uictfonttextstylebody"; font-size: 21px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: UICTFontTextStyleBody; font-size: 21px;">
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Heaven forbid you had freckles! Remember the portraits of Queen Elizabeth 1 of England? A real paleface! She was a redhead......just saying..... It was only working class women who worked in the sun who were tanned.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Times changed again in the 1920's, popularized by Coco Chanel, and the privileged could spend time in the sun, with a tan being associated with health, wealth and leisure, while the pale working class were confined to factories and offices.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Now again, with more knowledge about the harmful effects of too much sun, umbrellas are seen more on sunny days, as well as in the rain.</div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Probably the most popular periods for the parasol were Regency, Edwardian and Victorian. Some parasols to were quite tiny, just large enough to shade one tiny lady, while others were larger. </div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
The photo below shows the smaller size on the left, larger on the right.<br />

<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
To make a parasol, you will need</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">Pull tab from a beverage container</li>
<li style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">Lace (straight edged works better on smaller parasol, and stiff lace is best) </li>
<li style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">Tacky glue</li>
<li style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">I Dowel or wire for handle</li>
<li style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">1 small and 1 larger spools</li>
</ul>
<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "uictfonttextstylebody";"><span style="font-size: 21px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Remove the circle from the pull tab and punch a small hole in the centre. </div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Gather the side-edge of a strip of lace. Then pull gathers, join ends together and tie off, forming a circle to create the top of the parasol.</div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Tacky glue the lace to the top of the plastic circle, using clips to hold in place.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Gather a narrower strip of lace, join the two ends and slip over the handle to cover the plastic circle. Glue in place.</div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">

<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Push a dowel or wire from the insides through the centre of the plastic circle so that approximately 1/16 to 1/18 inch protrudes through the top. Glue the handle securely.</div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: uictfonttextstylebody; font-size: 21px;">
Stack two spools together to support the parasol. Drape the lace into a parasol shape. Give the parasol several coats of clear drying glue, hairspray or other stiffener.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0ZUZtRpX6-E/WIO2tEaNN8I/AAAAAAAAD1o/Q6lqSk53ZtMtGbgx0Sc4tsbG_gHJqDMHACPcB/s1600/IMG_7934.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0ZUZtRpX6-E/WIO2tEaNN8I/AAAAAAAAD1o/Q6lqSk53ZtMtGbgx0Sc4tsbG_gHJqDMHACPcB/s320/IMG_7934.JPG" width="231" /></a></div>
<br />
Cover the top of the handle with flowers or a bead. Please note the larger parasol has lace glued to both inside and outside of the parasol.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The battle of the Somme, WW1 was a tragic day for the Newfoundland Regiment, fighting near Beaumont-Hamel in France.<br />
This tiny self- governing country, (Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949) sent 801 soldiers into battle on July 1, 1916. The next day, only 68 were able to answer roll call.<br />
The Beaumont-Hamel memorial is perched up on a rocky promontory, suitably echoing the country's nickname -"The Rock". There are other memorials to the Newfoundlanders and labradorians across Belgium and France.<br />

Have a look at the CBC documentary, <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/events/beaumont-hamel-trail-of-caribou-1.3634073">TheTrail of the Caribou</a>, a depiction of how this war affected the people of Newfoundland for generations to come, and may even have played a part in making them a province in the Confederation of Canada, because so many young men had perished during this brutal war.<br />

Take a push pin, a star acrylic bead, a small circle punched from paper, a round bead and a seed bead. Also, cut an oval from card.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3VI8whJomOVOJp0dyW2RitNIFNy_sAcwkfNG6cuQMvRNR90YDeK3o5my6QQsKBBa80NsJBNc5gLpUiavjOMz1oKFo4xk7IznpklzkhDxrjZ5KXaXoKaHx4A5eO8qVAIGnt7FBwriQwME/s1600/IMG_7119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3VI8whJomOVOJp0dyW2RitNIFNy_sAcwkfNG6cuQMvRNR90YDeK3o5my6QQsKBBa80NsJBNc5gLpUiavjOMz1oKFo4xk7IznpklzkhDxrjZ5KXaXoKaHx4A5eO8qVAIGnt7FBwriQwME/s320/IMG_7119.JPG" width="238" /></a></div>
<br />
Then put some Play Dough or something similar into one segment of the star bead and glue in place. This will provide a point of attachment to the wall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMfnGkkxYTp0bAGciLXYTlv6WpPcQ6AWirASPNcXnJhGUDm5XUvVMou9Cf0E1yPfARdxYeL66sz7nt97u94wSAAVcv8krcPBxTzXSRSET8noDgv0v1OOdBuyf6R8_6kR9clQ3o9Jui6ug/s1600/IMG_7120.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMfnGkkxYTp0bAGciLXYTlv6WpPcQ6AWirASPNcXnJhGUDm5XUvVMou9Cf0E1yPfARdxYeL66sz7nt97u94wSAAVcv8krcPBxTzXSRSET8noDgv0v1OOdBuyf6R8_6kR9clQ3o9Jui6ug/s320/IMG_7120.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Place the star bead on top of the push pin and glue in place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Can you believe the price? I left the tag on so you can see.<br />
Here is how it started out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwMu4n-6TDWEWmNzYFXQJOqqMNx2-S4RN0uzI3Jv6F_atsCsnfjeIkasPByzUVfKTjYJuwDG8OVErdIjE9cJXcySo56TFHSj4v1Fwb_imxHAC-sPYC9UbIGEuWVMGbYEARnHTnvk35iHA/s1600/IMG_5793.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1060" data-original-width="1600" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwMu4n-6TDWEWmNzYFXQJOqqMNx2-S4RN0uzI3Jv6F_atsCsnfjeIkasPByzUVfKTjYJuwDG8OVErdIjE9cJXcySo56TFHSj4v1Fwb_imxHAC-sPYC9UbIGEuWVMGbYEARnHTnvk35iHA/s320/IMG_5793.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is the finished product. I have had the potbellied stove forever, as well as the checkers table. Printed and framed Canadian themed posters from the net. The upper attic gave me a chance to use more items from my stash...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM7uoPTC_39CSb1DTW8QbHbRFuEp7wGtumGLcr8BhgFvkPDHSl7DgqWH2xQk_tPeC4pQDnANw59KHysw6PZ5VVehM0V_8SuKcMivFOLUUC_mTOthjdxqu1WWPnUSKUyWfEcO8ToHS1eAk/s1600/IMG_7177.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM7uoPTC_39CSb1DTW8QbHbRFuEp7wGtumGLcr8BhgFvkPDHSl7DgqWH2xQk_tPeC4pQDnANw59KHysw6PZ5VVehM0V_8SuKcMivFOLUUC_mTOthjdxqu1WWPnUSKUyWfEcO8ToHS1eAk/s320/IMG_7177.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The fish trophy was made from a $store package of fish shapes meant for scrap booking, I think. See the little fish on the label? That is how they started out.<br />
